The Finance Lab

The tools from the courses, in one place — a live valuation & ratio calculator, a real cross-market stock comparison, candlestick charts, and a pattern-spotting exercise where the outcome is revealed only after you commit. Numbers marked real, sourced are point-in-time facts; those marked illustrative are stylised to teach the mechanic honestly.

These are the same widgets embedded in the chapters, gathered here so you can practise the moves without hunting for them. New to the ideas? Start with the chapters below; already comfortable and want reps? Stay here.

Fundamental analysis

Valuation & ratio calculator

Edit any number and every ratio recomputes. ARBL is pre-loaded with its real 2014 figures — the same ones worked by hand in the course, so you can check the tool against the text. Push the price to 750 to watch P/E climb on flat earnings; switch to Apple to see the same five ratios describe a very different business.

Interactive calculator (needs JavaScript). ARBL @ ₹661: P/E 30.8×, P/S 3.24×, P/BV 8.3×, net margin 10.5%, ROE 26.9%.

Same lens, two businesses

The same five ratios placed side by side. The shaded cell is the stronger side — but the last column is the lesson: a “win” built on a buyback-shrunk denominator is not real quality.

Interactive comparison (needs JavaScript).

Technical analysis

Spot the pattern — then call it

Two setups, each a long slide into a textbook bullish engulfing. You see the price only up to the pattern; you commit; then the future is revealed. They look identical at decision time — the difference shows up only after.

Interactive exercise (needs JavaScript): two identical-looking engulfings — one runs ~+14%, the other is a bull trap that falls ~21%.

Real outcomes · worked vs. failed

Strategies that paid, and strategies that stung

The point of every tool above is judgement under uncertainty. These are real, documented cases from the courses — one where the framework said “consider” and was rewarded, one where it said “pass” and was vindicated. Same discipline, opposite verdicts.

worked · listing gain
+101%

IRCTC IPO (2019)

A profitable, monopoly business at a modest price with extraordinary demand (112× overall, NII 354×). The IPO checklist had zero hard minuses on the rows that matter — verdict: consider. It listed at ₹644 vs a ₹320 issue price. Figures verified from public reporting.

failed · listing loss
−27%

Paytm / One97 IPO (2021)

Losses, a stretched price, and the big private cheques staying home (1.89× subscribed, NII 0.24×). The same checklist flagged the heavyweight rows — verdict: pass. It closed at ₹1,564 vs a ₹2,150 issue price on debut. Figures verified from public reporting.

Want to run the full IPO framework yourself, step by step? That is the Sizing Up an IPO practical lesson.
